What brings us together should stay.
Some moments last only a few minutes, yet we remember them for a lifetime, not because of every detail, but because of who stood beside us. For many people in Switzerland, fireworks are part of those moments: on 1 August, on New Year’s Eve, at weddings, village festivals and club events.
On 29 November 2026, Swiss voters will decide on the fireworks initiative.
What does the initiative want?
The initiative would add a new article (Art. 74a) to the Federal Constitution banning the sale and use of fireworks that make noise. Cantonal authorities could only grant exceptions for events of supra-regional importance.
What would a YES mean in practice?
- Private classic fireworks would no longer be allowed, not even on 1 August or New Year’s Eve.
- Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and local customs such as the Böögg could no longer be celebrated with classic fireworks as they are today.
- Club, municipal and company events would also be affected unless they receive a special permit.
- Public fireworks displays would only be possible as an exception with cantonal approval.
Why vote NO?
1. A nationwide ban is unnecessary.
Cantons and municipalities can already restrict fireworks by time and place or require permits, and they use these powers to respond to local needs. The initiative would replace these tailored local solutions with a blanket ban for all of Switzerland.
2. Preserving freedom, personal responsibility and tradition.
Fireworks have been part of our celebrations for generations. They create moments when families, friends and whole communities come together. What’s needed is consideration and personal responsibility, not ever more bans.
3. Protecting Swiss businesses, jobs and expertise.
Behind every firework are specialist retailers, pyrotechnicians, importers, manufacturers and event organisers. A broad ban would remove a core part of their business and put jobs, investment and years of specialised know-how at risk.
4. The Federal Council and Parliament say NO.
The Federal Council recommends rejecting the initiative. The National Council voted 131 to 50 against (18 abstentions), and the Council of States voted 40 to 3 against (1 abstention).
Consideration: yes. Nationwide ban: no.
We can show consideration, take responsibility and act where it’s needed without banning a tradition for the whole country. Freedom with responsibility. Living tradition. Vote NO on 29 November 2026.
